Castlemaine 21

Castlemaine 21 done for another 2 years!

Well, nothing but smiles all round this rally with the weather on our side and a well organised event to boot!
Friday lunch at Vellacott’s saw old friends catching up and chatting about all manner of things (Cars mostly) and some new faces present as well.
Friday dinner was a real success, probably the best so far with finger food, a few bevvies and a smart venue. It was over too quickly.
Saturday’s train ride and BBQ lunch made it a family friendly affair, I counted 14 kids! Russell Cayley and his partner Gayle Hill did a fantastic job and judging by the sell-out of most items at the Auto Jumble, this rally’s paraphernalia was popular as well.
The quality of the food at Rally dinner on Saturday night was noted and everyone seemed to be relaxed and happy.
The Sunday display at Beaufort went very nicely, a new venue and a good one too. Many additional cars attended: The Monteleone brothers in Tony’s very nice 3rd Series Beta Coupe and of course Charlie of Italian Job fame in his extraordinary Evolution Integrale just to name a couple.

As this is being penned, the tourists are on the Final stages of the SA “extended tour”, news has filtered through that Alan and Shellagh Hornsby’s efforts have not been wasted and that everyone on the tour has had a ball.

See the following link supplied by Rob Alsop (Fulvia Zagato) of the display at Beaufort at lunch on Sunday.

Castlemaine and the SA Tour

Castlemaine is almost upon us.  Please note conditions 5 and 6 on the entry form. 5 – The closing date for all entries is Friday 30-9-2011. Entries received after this
date may be accepted at the discretion of the organizers, but car details may not be included in the Official Programme. And 6 – A late entry fee of $10 applies after this date.

We start with lunch at the Vellacott home on Friday and the evening reception will be at the Art Gallery. Saturday is the ‘Train Ride Picnic Day’ and in the morning we convene at the Western Oval (on the left just before the CBD on entering from Melbourne). Lunch will be at the Muckleford Railway Station. There will be a Steam Train ride into Castlemaine and back before lunch for those who wish it. Our guest of honour, Angela Verschoor, will address us at the Forum on the Flavia models. The dinner will be
in the Town Hall. Sunday is the ‘Display Day of Lancias’. Again we convene at the Western Oval and set off for lunch at Beaufort.

As at the last Castlemaine, the judging of the cars will be on Saturday afternoon and the
awards will be presented at the dinner on Saturday night. As always, members need to book their own accommodation. The committee has booked the Castle Motel to accommodate overseas guests but we have a few rooms spare so contact Peter
Renou know if you wish to secure a room there.

A list of various accommodations with the ability to book is available on www.maldoncastlemaine.com.au. The Castlemaine Information Centre can also help
with accommodation suggestions and can be contacted on 03 5471 1975, 1800 171 888 or visitors@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

After lunch at Beaufort the Tourists leave for South Australia. Highlights of the Tour will
include the Coorong, a free day on Fleurieu Peninsula to visit Adelaide or Wineries or
Goolwa or even a drive through the Adelaide Hills to the Birdwood Motor Museum. Your
choice. Then up the Murray River through Murray Bridge and Mannum to the Riverland
area with another free day to explore the region before continuing along the Murray through Swan Hill to finish in Echuca. Opportunies for Paddle Steamer trips are available at Goolwa (book early as places are limited), Mildura, Swan Hill and Echuca.

Another highlight for the mechanically minded will be a visit to the Irrigation Museum at Cobdogla which houses the sole remaining Humphrey Pump in operating condition in the world. In this internal combustion pump the piston and flywheel of a normal engine are replaced by the body of water itself. The explosion acts on the surface of the
water.

We advise those wishing to go on the Tour to contact Peter Renou soon for a Tour Entry Form or send in the form sent out with the newsletter.  Accommodation will be tight as it is the beginning of the Tourist Season in South Australia and the Murray Region so book early.

Winners

As in previous Rallies, the basis upon which awards are judged follows our own ‘process’ which eschews over-the-top restorations and the like and tries to recognize the vagaries, triumphs and occasional set-backs of Lancia ownership. It also seeks to encourage new members in the care and restoration of their Lancias

The Committee has held to this policy since early Castlemaine Rally days and it serves to inject a little levity and the unexpected into the evening’s Dinner activities.

A roll-call of this year’ unexpected recipients follows:
