The Australian Lancia Register grew out of meetings of Lambda owners in Melbourne held early in 1971 with the idea of tracing Lambdas and Lambda owners. The first thought was to start a club for Lambda owners but it soon changed to a club to include all Lancias with the aims of recording all Lancias; providing a point of contact for owners; and encouraging the recovery and restoration of the cars. After advertising and enquiries there was a list of current Lancia owners and cars to be traced. It was then decided that a gathering of Lancia owners should be held.
Bill O’Reilly and Russell Meehan went to look at Beechworth as a possible location as it was closer to Sydney where there was already a Lancia club in operation and it was hoped that some NSW cars might come to the rally. Beechworth did not have adequate accommodation at that time so they moved on to Castlemaine where some Lambda owners lived and there would be good support. The Castle Motel proved to be suitable for the rally and most of the entrants were able to be accommodated there.
The rally started on Saturday afternoon with entrants gathering at the Castle Motel where dinner was held that night. On Sunday after morning tea at Mrs Vellacott’s historic house, there was a tour to the Fryerstown Oval for lunch and a display. The success of this rally encouraged the committee to hold further rallies every two years.
